Scientists have developed a miniature device used to scan extraterrestrial samples for signs of life. The device can fit in a person’s hand and weighs only 17 pounds. It will scan samples using a technique known as laser desorption mass spectrometry (LDMS). NASA's Webb telescope captured NGC 346, a star-forming region in a galaxy not so far far away from our Milky Way. The cluster's conditions are similar to "cosmic noon," the era of rapid star formation when galaxies were forming after the Big Bang.
